The National Maritime Museum Amsterdam houses some of the most important objects relating to the history of naval and merchant shipping. The museum building dates back to 1656 when it was used as a supply warehouse for the Dutch navy.

Princes Beatrix of the Netherlands opened the museum on April 13th 1973. The collection contains paintings, scale models, weapons and charts. Paintings portray Dutch Naval Officers such as Michiel de Ruyter and impressive sea battles and mock battles.

Besides this collection the museum also has several ships including one life-size replica of the Dutch V. O. C. ship: "Amsterdam".
